General Governor Recruitment

Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation is looking to recruit three General Governors.

What Governors do

Governors play a vital role in the Foundation. There are 27 at present with three vacancies. They attend quarterly meetings and may stand as well as vote in elections to the Foundation's Board of Management.

Governors provide input to the Board towards the Foundation’s annual Business Plan. They give their views at consultation meetings and raise questions on issues of the day and, as invited by the Board, they comment on draft policies, strategies and future initiatives.

They also participate in workshops and represent the Foundation on internal committees and external bodies.

Majority are elected

The majority of the Governors, 16 of the 30, are elected from outside the Foundation. Six are elected through a postal ballot, once every five years, by registered voters from the ‘public’ Register of Electors for Letchworth Garden City. Eight are nominated and elected by clubs and organisations. Two are elected councillors appointed by Herts CC and NHDC.

General Governors

A minority of Governors, 14 in total, are appointed by the Board of Management on the basis of their skills and experience in areas of industry, enterprise and commerce, relevant to the Foundation’s interests.

The Foundation Group operates in a wide range of business sectors.

Over 70% of its income derives from its 5,500-acre property Estate, including industrial and commercial premises.

It farms the 2,500-acre rural Estate and generates additional income from five trading subsidiaries (e.g. Broadway Cinema Ltd) which ‘gift aid’ their profits back to the Foundation.

The organisation operates a number of community facilities and services, supporting its charitable objects, including a Museum, a Day Hospital and a Community Centre / entertainment venue.
